Today marks the 50th anniversary of Elton John’s first show at the Troubadour

written by Erika Gimenes

50 years ago today, 23-year-old Red Dwight performed his first of eight shows at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA. He awed his audience and transformed into the diva Elton John before their own eyes. A superstar was born.

By the time the week was over, Elton had performed in front of much of the Hollywood music elite…and even some future collaborators.

“I couldn’t really make up my mind back then whether I was Reg or I was Elton… but I know who I am now,” Elton John says of the golden start of his career.

The audience loved it and the next day it became apparent that the critics loved it. The LA Times reported that rock music had a new star. Elton John sold 30,000 copies in the space of two weeks.

Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali, dead at 68

written by Erika Gimenes

Frankie Banali, the drummer for the heavy metal bands Quiet Riot and W.A.S.P has died at 68, losing his battle to pancreatic cancer.

Last November, Banali said he wanted to keep performing life, stating he had “everything to win and everything to lose in this situation. I intend to treat it the way I treat everything, which is to put everything into it and fight it all the way to the end.”

Banali joined Quiet Riot in 1983 after they released mega-hit album Mental Health and would contribute for 12 more of the group’s records, as well as played drums for seven of W.A.S.P’s albums.

In a statement, his family said: “He was a long time advocate for animal rescue, a spokesperson for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and a sponsor of Children International. Donations in his name are encouraged for Fixnation.org, Pancan.org, Children.org.”

Frankie is survived by his devoted wife Regina, loving daughter Ashley, many dear friends, dedicated fans, and a menagerie of rescue animals, all of whom are family.

Testimonials

For years Erika has helped my band Dirty Machine transform from garage band to sunset strip powerhouse. The promotion and advice she offers is bar to none. She has single handily walked us into doors we couldn’t have gotten into ourselves. The most rewarding thing about working with her is she actually cares about “up and coming” bands. Not to mention her passion for music is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Make her a believer and then buckle up. – David Leach, Dirty Machine
