Who will win big at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards?
Follow along with me and find out who takes home a moon man!
The Weekend opened the show with his contagious single “Blinded By The Light” atop a fancy Manhattan building with light strobes and fireworks along the river, lighting up the skyline of a gorgeous New York Sunday night.
Ok, I know who that is. Maybe I won’t be so lost in trying to catch up to these Millenials after all – or so I thought.
Next is Miley Cyrus who came to show everyone that the 80 mullet is back in full force. I mean, if anyone can pull off that look it’s her. And the 80’s Madonna vibe. I see it girl. I also see you haven’t given up on the wrecking ball that you’re still swinging from a decade later. You could have done better on singing to track though. My husband looks up and laughs “HA she’s on the ball again” and rolled his eyes. Again, pull out another trick from your hat cuz this one is getting old.
Maluma brought “Colombia to the VMAs” as introduced by host Keke Palmer (who is she anyway?) but I thought that I was watching him from the Bayfront Park right here in Miami while watching a Toyota car commercial.
BTS performed their hit “Dynamite” from an empty (fabricated) Times Square (good job on the virtual stage MTV). I was never a fan but the sucker here for boybands finally sees why they are so adored. The other part of me wishes that it was One Direction but we’ll leave that for another day. It did leave me longing for a Harry Styles “Watermelon Sugar” performance though. That was the song of the summer. Why is he not performing today?
Wait. Is this a drive-in broadcast? Because I see the VIPs sitting atop their car roofs, but the people standing atop the buildings were supposedly fake. No wonder they were not social distancing.
Lady GaGa. I give her credit. She has an amazing voice and talent but does she have any other songs than “Rain On Me?” because I feel like I’ve heard this song every 4 minutes during a commercial break. I give her an A for her masks though. One more eccentric than the other. My 10 yr old son did lose it when his “imaginary girlfriend” Ariana Grande came on the TV set and did some epic dance moves in the middle of the living room.
And my heart just stopped. Taylor Swift just lost to BTS for Best Pop. Like. How? Ok I know all my swifties are just as heartbroken as I am at this moment.
Lady Gaga said during her acceptance speech “If you want to look like this, don’t eat the California roll” after telling a story of only drinking (and not eating) after moving to LA to maintain her figure. I would drink but not eat because “I didn’t come here for the California Roll.”
Uhhhhh…..of all people, I’d never imagined Gaga, who is all full of goal setting and positivity would say such a horrible remark, especially end her speech with a comment like that. Appalling.
Can someone please tell me who DojaCat is? Why do I feel like every single female act performing tonight is blonde, with a semi-seethrough onesie with all backup dancers look like they just came out of the Bill & Ted 3’s little space egg?
Lady Gaga came to receive MTV’s first-ever “Tricon award” looking like she straight up came out of the set of Game of Thrones. She shared the award with everyone at home, urging them to think of 3 things that defined who they were and take a moment to reward themselves for their bravery. “I hope the people at home that have big dreams know how grateful I am and I want you to know that we can do this too. Culture may feel less alive in some ways and a renaissance is coming, and the rage of art will empower you.”
When CNCO started performing, though I’m Latin I could for the life of me not understand their Spanish. My husband goes “Who the hell is this?” only for me to tell him. “It’s funny how every country now has a boyband.” My response” Well, they’re definitely not One Direction.”
The Weekend finished the night by accepting the away for Video of the Year for “Blinded By The Night” and used his acceptance speech to bring awareness to racial injustice.
I’ve been covering these awards for 20 years now, but I gotta admit this is the first time it has lasted an hour. I am not sure if it’s due to the different format and related to the pandemic, but it was definitely strange to have this award show last a little over an hour.
I hope you all enjoyed the coverage!
