Barclay Center, the venue that has hosted MTV VMAs for many years will have to skip the celebrations this year due to the pandemic in the country.
Although Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the green light for the award show to be held at the venue back in June, MTV announced they would opt for outdoor shows to be spread throughout New York City this year, as they must adhere to the guidance of state and local officials and move the performances outside.
Despite the change, the network promised the show would “pay homage to the incredible resiliency of New York with several outdoor performances around the City with limited or no audience.” New York City was one of the first U.S. cities hit hard by the virus, but cases have leveled off and some restrictions are being loosened. The show plans to return to Barclays in 2021.
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards are set to be broadcast on August 30th.
